On the evening of November 9th, at the opening ceremony of the 15th National Games, a replica of the bronze Goudiao (a ritual vessel) over two thousand years ago are struck by modern robots. Then, the robots playedthe song "Chasing the Moon in Colorful Clouds", bringing about a dreamy dialogue between the past and the present.
This musical instrument originates from bronze Goudiao (a type of percussion instrument), afirst-class national cultural relic in the Nanyue King Museum’s collection, unearthed from the tomb of King Wen of Nanyue ofthe Western Han Dynasty. The Goudiaofeatures a concave-shaped body with a curved mouthpiece and a flat, elongated handle, typically mounted on a stand or placed on the ground for performance.
According to Wang WeiYi, vice director of the Nanyue King Museum, Gouyao is a bronze percussion instrument that originated in the Wu-yue region during the Eastern Zhou period. It has been discovered in Anhui, jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Shandong and other places, with the largest number found in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, which were the main regions of the ancient Wu-yue culture. In ancient times, musical instruments were classified by their materials, and there were eight kinds of musical instruments, namely, metal, stone, earth, wood, silk, leather, gourd and bamboo, collectively known as the "Eight Sounds". The Goudiao was made of bronze, which belonged to the metal category.
Among the extant Goudiao, those with more than three pieces and make up a set are extremely rare. The Goudiao unearthed from the tomb of King Wen of Nanyue in the Western Han Dynasty in Guangzhou consistsof eight pieces in a set, which is a rare and large-scale collection. It has four typical characteristics. Firstly, it is the largest in size; Secondly, it was produced simultaneously with many court instruments such as bells, chime stones, qin and se, and was an instrument cast by the Nanyue Kingdom itself. Thirdly, the evident casting marks demonstrate their practical use in imperial courts;Fourthly, this is the only bronze Goudiao from the Western Han period that has been discovered so far.
It isexplained thatthe first discovery of such a large percussion instrument of Yue ethnic in Lingnan. This set of Goudiao weighs 191 kilograms, with the largest piece being 64 centimeters high and 40 kilograms, and the smallest one being 36.8 centimeters high and 10.75 kilograms.
The tomb of King Wen of Nanyue is the burial place of Zhao Mo, the second king of the Nanyue kingdom. It is located in the depth of Xianggang Mountain in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou City. The tomb consists of seven coffin chambers, each with different functions. 121 pieces/sets of burial objects such as musical instruments and wine vessels were unearthed from the east chamber, indicating the banquet and music place of the tomb owner before his death. A set of bronze Goudiao with eight pieces was unearthed under the north wall of the east chamber, with other large percussion instruments nearby such as bronze bells and stone chime qing.
